Project Continua Contributor Guidelines
Project Continua accepts submissions and articles pertaining to biographical subjects. In general, we seek pieces that demonstrate rigorous scholarship, explanation of the figure’s significance in her time, and some commentary on the subject’s relevance to users of Project Continua. The prose should be easy to read, and appropriately engaged with the best available research to promote greater understanding of women’s lives, work, and related gender issues.
Project Continua, as the name suggests, is a virtual laboratory where scholars experiment with ideas, share research, and continually add to women’s intellectual history. In the spirit of this collaboration, biographies may be subject to change as new research comes to light.
Articles, however, will remain in their original form as submitted and accepted.
Who Can Submit?
We welcome submissions of an original biography and/or article to be considered for publication in Project Continua, provided the author owns the copyright to the work.
General Submission Rules
Submitted biographies cannot have been previously published or forthcoming in an archival journal or book (print or electronic). In addition, by submitting material to Project Continua, the author is stipulating that the material is not currently under review at another journal (electronic or print) and that he or she will not submit the material to another journal (electronic or print) until the completion of the editorial decision process at Project Continua.
Content
Submissions should relate to the mission of the website: the lives of historical women, from the Ancients to the present day, their careers, cultural contributions, interactions with male and female contemporaries, reputations, and, if possible, the trajectory of their presence and/or absence in later periods. We are also interested in biographies that report on and interpret the larger gender and women’s issues that new research makes possible about individual and groups of women.
Format
Consult our Style Sheet here.
Length
Biographies and articles should be between 500-7000 words.
Style
Submissions should be formatted according to the most recent edition of the Project Continua Style Sheet, using double-spacing and explanatory endnotes. Submissions of biographies should be accompanied by a bibliography, according to the Project Continua Style Sheet.
Review Policies
Upon receipt of the submission, the biography or article will be reviewed by Project Continua editorial advisors. The submission may be accepted for publication, revisions requested, or rejected, within approximately sixty days of receipt of the work.
Our goal for every biography or article under review is to make it stronger, clearer, and more accurate through multiple readings, constructive criticism, and Project Continua editorial feedback.
